Medical Center board suspends $1,000 meeting allowance to address financial challenges
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Board of Directors of the American Samoa Medical Center has implemented a significant change to its members' compensation structure. Following a recent vote, the Board has decided to suspend the previously established $1,000 per-meeting allowance, which was paid to members for their participation.
This decision reflects the Board's commitment to financial prudence and responsible resource management, particularly given the substantial accounts payable obligations the Medical Center faces. The Board's press release emphasizes its commitment to addressing these financial challenges while upholding transparency and accountability.
Effective January 1, 2026, all board members will receive a standardized monthly stipend of $416.67, in accordance with the provisions stipulated in American Samoa Code Annotated Section 13.0103(j). This legal framework ensures equitable compensation for board members. The press release states that this action reflects the Board’s commitment to integrity, responsible stewardship of public resources, and dedicated service to the employees of the LBJ Tropical Medical Center and the citizens of American Samoa.
The increase in the allowance for the board of directors started in 2023.
According to Section 13.0103(j), board members are entitled to an annual compensation of $5,000, while the chairperson shall receive a yearly salary of $6,000. Furthermore, provisions have been established to reimburse non-resident board members for necessary travel expenses, including lodging, meals, and telecommunications costs incurred in the performance of their official duties.
The current composition of the Board includes Dr. Pedro, Faipule Faimealelei Anthony Allen, Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele, Lydia Faleafine-Nomura, and Maaelopa Bob Tuiasosopo, who was appointed to the Board by recess appointment.
