Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This morning, satellite imagery shows showers over parts of the coastal waters of American Samoa. These showers are expected to remain in the region for the remainder of the day.

The forecast for the Tutuila, Aunu'u, and the Manu'a Islands are numerous showers (60% chance) with east/southeast winds around 15 mph. The Small Craft Advisory remains in effect.
A trough that moved through the region last night, which produced thunderstorms in some parts of the territory, continued to weaken as it moved away from the Samoan Islands overnight and early this morning.

Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure moved into the region to decrease cloud coverage throughout the morning hours. The data shown by the latest balloon release shows a fairly moist atmosphere over American Samoa. However, the latest ASCAT reading shows uniform winds to help restrain showers from developing even though a precipitable water values are above 2 inches. Winds of around 15 mph will remain from the east through Sunday afternoon.

The strong ridge of high pressure, centered well to the southeast of the Samoan Islands, will move further away from the region tomorrow. By tomorrow night, another ridge will enter from the southwest. However, this ridge will be weaker compared to the aforementioned ridge currently over the region. This will allow the winds to shift to help trigger some showers in the area.

No flash flooding is expected from these showers, but the chance of showers will increase from scattered to numerous showers overnight on Sunday.

Otherwise, expect wind speeds to be stable, around 15 mph, through Monday.
