Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Mrs. Carri-Lee Magalei-Tulafono has been appointed as the Acting Treasurer for the Department of Treasury, effective immediately. 

Former Acting Treasurer Bret Butler was vacated his position after failing to  obtain the necessary legislative confirmation for the position — he was passed by the Senate but failed twice in the House.

Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has officially confirmed Magalei-Tulafono’s appointment in a detailed memorandum released last week. This document underscores her extensive two-decade tenure at the Treasury Department.

Throughout her career, Magalei-Tulafono has specialized in the complex analysis of federally funded grant programs that are administered by the American Samoa Government (ASG). Her proficiency extends to a comprehensive understanding of the integrated financial systems that ASG has utilized in recent years, an essential element for ensuring efficient fiscal management, according to the memorandum.

It continues that her experience encompasses critical domains such as payroll processing and the meticulous management of disbursement protocols — both crucial to maintaining transparent and effective government financial operations.

Of note, Magalei-Tulafono is the daughter of Senator Magalei Logoviʻi Magalei, who served as Treasurer under Governor Togiola Tulafono.

The memorandum notes that Magalei-Tulafono holds a master’s degree in accounting, reinforcing her academic foundation and professional competence in finance.

Governor Pulaali’i expresses complete confidence in Mrs. Magalei-Tulafono's ability to effectively carry out the diverse duties and responsibilities of this pivotal position.
