New COVID related death reported for Wednesday — total is now 11

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — LBJ Medical Center recorded a new COVID-19 related death on Wednesday and the deceased is  a 74-year old male, according to officials who attended yesterday’s COVID-19 Task Force daily briefing from the Emergency Operations Center.

The new fatality was announced by LBJ acting chief of staff, Dr. Akapusi Ledua during the hospital’s presentation at the briefing and it now brings American Samoa’s total to eleven COVID-19 related deaths since the community outbreak on Feb. 21 with the first death reported on Mar. 2.

Meanwhile, Health Department reports during the briefing that there are 93 new positive cases as of Apr. 6, taking American Samoa’s total cumulative count to 5,172 community cases, with 2,591 active cases.

The DoH Situational Report — which included the one-new fatality — shows that the number of positive cases continues to increase for populated villages, topping Tafuna at 901, Nu’uuli with 584 and Leone at 390. Cases for Aunu’u island has increased to 17 while the Manu’a island remains COVID-free.
