One fatality counted during the DPS Holiday Enforcement
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Public Safety's Holiday Enforcement initiative, running from December 19th to January 3rd, saw an active police response, with officers handling over 100 calls related to public disturbances, break-ins, thefts, and other incidents affecting community safety.
Police Commissioner Taʻaga Saite Moliga shared insights during an interview with KVZK TV, noting that patrol officers have been exceptionally busy throughout this period. Specifically addressing traffic enforcement, the Commissioner noted that more than 4,000 vehicles were meticulously inspected at checkpoints established during nighttime roadblocks in the Nuʻuuli area.
He reported that 900 vehicles were pulled over for various infractions, resulting in 376 drivers undergoing breathalyzer tests on site. Of those tested, only 15 drivers were arrested and subsequently taken into custody for driving under the influence (DUI).
These individuals are scheduled to appear in court at the next available hearing to face the legal consequences of their actions.
In terms of traffic-related incidents, there was a tragic accident that occurred in Afono, which unfortunately resulted in a fatality. This incident involved three individuals who were promptly transported to LBJ Hospital for medical attention. Regrettably, officials later confirmed that one of the individuals involved did not survive the ordeal. The Commissioner extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time.
Additionally, a traffic accident occurred in Manuʻa, where a driver was struck by a vehicle. The victim was airlifted from Manuʻa to receive urgent medical care. Fortunately, it has been confirmed that he sustained injuries but is currently in stable condition, and medical staff are closely monitoring his recovery.
