Police officers allegedly partying at Leloaloa face assault charges
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Commissioner of Public Safety Taaga Saite Moliga has confirmed the reassignment of three police officers who are currently facing allegations of assault brought forth by a family in Leloaloa. These individuals, comprising two male and one female officers, have been placed in administrative positions while an investigation into the allegations is conducted.
The complaint asserts that the officers were engaged in a social gathering at the Leloaloa jetty over the weekend, during which they reportedly consumed alcohol and created significant noise disturbances that persisted beyond midnight. A male family member, concerned about the disruption, approached the officers to request that they disperse.
According to the family's report, this request was met with aggression, resulting in the alleged assault of the male relative, which caused injuries to his head, eye, arms, and leg.
The severity of these injuries raises questions about the officers' behavior in a non-duty context.
In light of these developments, Commissioner Ta’aga has emphasized his commitment to equitable treatment for all involved, stating that officers will not receive preferential treatment because of their status as law enforcement personnel. He has directed the Criminal Investigations Division to conduct a comprehensive examination of the allegations, underscoring that all officers are subject to the law.
Moreover, the Commissioner indicated that he will await the findings of the Criminal Investigations Division before instituting any internal disciplinary action.
He emphasized the need to establish a clear, factual basis for the incident, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability within the police department. This approach is essential in maintaining public trust in law enforcement agencies and ensuring that all allegations of misconduct are addressed appropriately.
