Pago Pago, AMERICA SAMOA — A trough generating an extended period of rain and breezy conditions will drop across American Samoa Wednesday night and Thursday.

The rain will linger through Friday. Heaviest rainfall is expected Thursday and Thursday night before diminishing Friday and Friday night. Current global models are in agreement with a large area of precipitation moving over the territory by at least Wednesday night. Evident on latest satellite visible imagery, is an elongated line of clouds (associated with a surface trough), extending from Cook Islands all the way to the Solomon Islands.

Although present Upper Air Soundings show a very stable and dry atmosphere, this pattern is forecast to become more wet and unstable as a ridge builds behind the trough and pushes this line south and over the territory.

This scenario will influence an uptick in showers, more so Thursday night through Friday. In addition, present GFS model runs depict winds increasing for a short while following the trend in precipitation.

For the long term forecast, latest model data shows the aforementioned ridge driving weather conditions by at least Saturday. This feature is forecast to usher in dry and stable air over the territory, and restoring fair weather conditions.
