Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — With this coming Monday, Labor Day, a local and federal holiday, Acting Gov. Talauega Eleasalo V. Ale has declared that all ASG offices will be closed and normal activities suspended on that day. Essential employees required to work on Monday, Sept. 6th, will receive holiday wages in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

“Labor Day is a time to honor and recognize the labor movement and all laborers for their contributions to the development and achievement of our great Nation,” Talauega said in an Aug. 30th memorandum for the observance of Labor Day holiday.

He encourages all to take time this weekend to “honor and celebrate all the working people” in American Samoa.

Besides ASG, a majority of businesses in the private sector will also be closed Monday, including the two local banks and StarKist Samoa, whose employees are getting Labor Day holiday gifts of two cases of wahoo.

Not a part of the Lemanu Administration’s agenda, is the ASG Workforce Day celebration, an initiative of the Lolo Administration over the past 8-years, held on the Friday prior the Labor Day holiday. Last year’s final celebration was scaled way back,  due to local COVID-19 restrictions.

In observance of Labor Day, Samoa News is taking the federal holiday off, as well. Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.
