Unvaccinated man latest COVID victim; total deaths now at 24

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — LBJ Medical Center has recorded one new COVID-19 related death, bringing the total number of fatalities to 24 since the first death was reported late last month, according to officials who participated in Friday’s COVID-19 Task Force daily briefing.

LBJ reported during the briefing that the death occurred on Apr. 19 and has since been confirmed to be related to the deadly coronavirus pandemic.  And the deceased in a 74-year old male who was unvaccinated.

Meanwhile, the Health Department reported during its Friday morning’s briefing that on Apr. 21, about 404 individuals were tested at DoH clinics and LBJ, and the results are 17 new positives.

With the new cases, the cumulative number testing positive since the Feb. 22 community spread of COVID-19 commenced has reached 5,724. As of Apr. 21, there are 471 active cases.

According to DoH there are still no community cases reported in the Manu’a island group and the island group remains COVID free.

DoH also reported that the second booster dose is being administered to those eligible, with Pop-up vaccination clinics as well as DoH clinics this week  Thursday, Friday and today, Saturday, Apr. 23r. For update on the vaccination sites call DoH at 219.
