Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Vaitogi village will be observing and enforcing their annual curfew or "SA" for this year starting at 6:00 pm today, Tuesday, September 15, 2026, and ending at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. 

The tradition dates back over a century to 1896. 

According to historical village accounts, a massive Great Fire broke out and raged violently through Vaitogi lands for days. The fire could not be controlled, destroying scores of acres of crops, vegetation, and fales, directly threatening the lives of everyone in the village. With no physical way left to combat the flames, the village chiefs gathered all the residents together to pray for divine intervention.

Local tradition states that immediately following their unified prayers, a miraculous heavy rain fell and completely extinguished the fire. 

To honor this miracle, the village council established the first official 24-hour sā in 1897. It has been strictly observed every year since, traditionally taking place from 6:00 PM on September 15th to 6:00 PM on September 16th.
