Man found dead on yacht in Pago Pago Harbor

A man was found dead on a yacht in Pago Pago Harbor, and this is being treated as a homicide case until otherwise noted, says Commissioner of Public Safety, William Haleck.

Responding to Samoa News queries Wednesday night, Haleck said the Criminal Investigation Division has been assigned to this case and Assistant Chief of Police and CID Commander, Lavata’i Taase Sagapolutele is leading the investigation.

He said that it’s too early to tell what occurred, but sooner or later the investigation will be complete and the determination will be made as to what happened. He also pointed out that an autopsy will be conducted.

He explained that the matter was reported to the police by the deceased’s friend who went to check on the elderly gentleman, only to find him dead. He told Samoa News that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was contacted with the assistance of the Marine Marine Patrol Unit at the scene, the night the man was found.

Police officers said that according to the female friend, the elderly man lived on the yacht by himself and it’s believed that he’s been dead for several days. According to EMS crews, the body found was starting to decompose. The yacht was towed to the main dock and the EMS crew removed the corpse.

In the meantime, CID is collecting evidence and interviewing those near the area, says Assistant Chief of Police and CID Commander, Lavata’i.
