Nat'l Weather Service updates advisory to Tropical Storm Watch for all Samoa

The National Weather Service has issued a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for Tutuila, Aunu’u, Swains and Manu’a islands until 03:00 p.m., Friday, December 26, 2014, due to heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression 05F. Flash flooding is imminent and may cause small streams to overflow, resulting in flooding in low lying areas and roadways.

Residents in low lying areas are reminded to take necessary precautionary measures.  The public is advised to be extra cautious when driving through flooded roads.  There is also a risk of mudslides and landslides along steep slopes and mountainous areas, as the grounds become saturated with water.

The National Weather Service has also issued a TROPICAL STORM WATCH for ALL islands until Saturday morning, December 27, 2014. This is due to a Tropical Depression located near or about 220 miles north of Tutuila at 09:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2014 and slowly tracking South-Southeast.

The National Weather Service also issued a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT on rainy conditions and strong winds earlier today (complete text in local news section) and a WIND ADVISORY this morning, December 26, 2014 for ALL islands of American Samoa. Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 MPH are expected. Strong and gusty winds can potentially create damage to structures, power lines and trees.

Residents and drivers in areas prone to strong gusty winds, flooding and or landslides are urged to make preparations and take precautionary measures for safety and to protect property.

The National Weather Service has also advised of the continuation of a FLASH FLOOD WATCH until Saturday, December 27, 2014, a HIGH SURF ADVISORY for Swains and Manu’a islands, a GALE WATCH is in effect for Northern waters of Tutuila and Manu’a islands, and a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY for Tutuila, Aunu’u, Manu’a, and Swains islands.

The American Samoa Department of Homeland Security – TEMCO will continue to monitor the situation and we will issue further bulletins if necessary. Report any weather related incident to EOC at 699-3800 or Police at 633-1111.
