This past weekend's American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Football action proved to be even more competitive — and is showing a lot of potential this year, as one of the most entertaining sports in American Samoa. In the past, not much attention was drawn to the sport due to its distortion in skills and experience – today, you must see it to believe it, not only in the Varsity Division, but in the Junior Varsity Division as well. The competition just keeps getting better and better.Last week's football action started Thursday, with the opening of the Junior Varsity Division's season, which was printed on Saturday’s Samoa News issue with photos included. Ltd.In the Varsity double header that was held Saturday morning, ASHSAA scheduled the Nu’uuli Wildcats to face the reigning champions of the season, the Tafuna Warriors who remain undefeated. Warriors Head Coach Okland Salave’a left the island with the hope of coming back to some good news, and indeed the Warriors lived up to it, after sending the Wildcats home with a punishing loss of 46 - 0. The Eastern Star Pride also showed much potential this year, as they are the only hope to bring the Warriors down this season, the Fagaitua Vikings who silenced the Samoana Sharks in a 46 - 7 blow out victory, as they too remain undefeated heading into playing their third game of the first round this season, this upcoming Saturday against the Wildcats. For the Junior Varsity Division, Samoana High School was showing much potential to winning the ball game in the first half of play, but mistakes on their own side of the ball caused them to fail their first game of the season. It was a loss against the Vikings 28 - 16.
