American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC)

The American Samoa athletes are gearing up to compete in the 2015 Pacific Games that will be taking place in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea this summer, from July 4-18. There will be a total of 133 athletes (79 males and 54 females) from 12 different sports federations competing in the games. The ASNOC wants the public to know that there will be group training sessions at the stadium every Wednesday until they leave for the games.

Each Wednesday, one sport that will be competing in the games will run the training to showcase to the public what their training consists of, and how they are getting ready for competition.  ASNOC invites the public out to the sessions that will begin tomorrow with the first sport being tennis. The scheduled starting time is 6:00 p.m. and it will be at the Sports Complex (Veterans Memorial Stadium).

In more ASNOC news, two Olympic Scholars left for New Caledonia this past Saturday to train at the New Caledonia Olympic Training Center. American Samoa weightlifters Tanumafili Jungblut and Apineru Vaoga will be training full time in New Caledonia up until the games and will continue with their training after the games as they attempt to qualify for the 2016 Olympics that will be taking place in Rio de Janeiro.

ASHSAA Boys Basketball

In the latest American Samoa High School Athletic Association’s (ASHSAA) Boys Varsity Basketball season, the defending champion Samoana Sharks are remaining steady at the #3 spot at this time, while the Tafuna Warriors are sitting at #2.  The Fa’asao Marist Crusaders are occupying the #1 spot right now in the Varsity rankings. Next games will be tomorrow, February 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Tafuna High School where the Warriors will be hosting the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats in both Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball action. In the Junior Varsity Division, the Faga’itua Vikings are the only undefeated team in the division, while the Sharks are right behind with two losses. The Warriors, Crusaders and Wildcats occupy the #3, 4 and 5 spots at this time.

ASHSAA Girls Softball

The Fa’asao Marist Cougars are on top of the standings in Girls Softball, as they defend their ASHSAA Girls Softball championship title this year. Right behind the Cougars are the Warriors at #2, Leone Lions at #3 followed by the Sharks who are in the last place spot at #4. The next softball games are tomorrow —Wednesday February 11— at the Tony Solaita Baseball Field where the Cougars will take on the Warriors while the Lions will be facing the Shark with a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.
