Political party leaders express condolences on Falema’o’s passing

Leaders of the local Republican Party and the Democratic Party have expressed sadness over the passing of the late ASG Treasurer Dr. Falema’o ‘Phil’ M. Pili, who was the vice chairman of the local GOP.

Speaking on behalf of GOP’s local leadership, chairman Dr. Victor Tofaeono said, “Our Party will be greatly handicapped by our colleague's passing as he was not only a lifelong active Republican and party Vice Chairman but he supported and promulgated the ideals and beliefs espoused by the national party.

“Falema'o believed in the power and opportunity of America's free-market economy and especially the importance of sensible business regulations that promote confidence in the local economy among consumers, entrepreneurs and businesses alike,” he said in a statement.

“On behalf of the Republican Party of American Samoa, ia manuia lau malaga, Falema'o. You will always be remembered for your servant leadership in our community. We will miss your kindness, compassion and friendship,” he added.

On behalf of the local Democratic Party, chairman Aliimau JR Scanlan extended the party’s deepest condolences to Pili’s family and friends.

“Setting aside our political differences, Falema’o was not only a longtime community service member, but a long time public servant to the people of American Samoa,” Ali’imau said in a statement from Seattle.

“He will be missed by many for his contributions towards the progress of American Samoa through whatever organizations or entities he was part of. American Samoa truly was unfortunate to lose a great leader last week and both local political parties lost a great colleague and friend,” Ali’imau said.

Pili passed away June 19 in Utah, where he will be laid to rest today following his final funeral service.
