Apia, SAMOA — A total of 16, 832 people applied for the New Zealand Quota Scheme this year.

According to the CEO of the Samoa Post Tupai Tupe Ualolo Nun Yan there were 15,400 applicants  from Upolu while 1,404 were from Savaii.

Tupai said the number of applicants has spiked again after a drop in the last two years which totalled 7000 and 8000. She added that in the past the total number of applicants at one time reached a total of 18,000.

Under the Quota Scheme a total of 1,100 Samoans are allowed to migrate to New Zealand every year.

Samoa Post plays a vital role in the Scheme Tupai explained. They provide  assistance in filling the forms to applicants who need help in this area and they  do this for a fee of $9. This year they helped to complete 1500 application forms.

Also all the completed applications forms must be posted through the Samoa Post to the New Zealand High Commission in Samoa. It costs one tala to post each envelope. It is required that each application form must be sealed in an envelope.

Tupai added posting the application forms would prevent people from forming a huge crowd  and causing congestion at the New Zealand High Office to hand these in. “ It’s for security reasons,” Tupai added.

Tupai emphasised that Samoa Post does not do the selection as some people have wrongly assumed.
