Apia, SAMOA — Samoa extended its nationwide lockdown on Wednesday for another 24 hours as a precautionary measure with the 26 positive COVID-19 cases in managed isolation.

The Samoa Observer is reporting today that Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa announced the government decision after a cabinet meeting, saying that the 24-hour nationwide lockdown in the island nation will expire at 6 p.m. local time on Friday.

Of the 26 people who tested positive for COVID-19 in Samoa, only five of them are nurses and the rest are passengers from last week's charter flight from Brisbane, Australia, she said, adding that the test results to determine the variant of the positive COVID-19 cases in Samoa will be made known in the next few days.

Samoa extended the original 48 hour lockdown on Monday after five new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country.

A six-hour window on Thursday (today in Samoa) from 8am to 2pm will give the public the opportunity to replenish their supplies while the nationwide lockdown continues.

The only services that are given the green light to operate on Thursday from 8am to 2pm are shops, super markets, cash power outlets, markets, banks, money transfers and pharmacies.

For those who will leave homes to utilize the services it is mandatory to wear facial masks, exercise social distancing, present vaccination cards and no children under 12 are allowed in these public places.

The test results to determine the variant of the positive COVID-19 cases will be made known in the next few days, Fiame added.
