Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Cancer continues to be the second leading cause of death in American Samoa, affecting more families than ever before. While population data is scant, this fact is evidenced by the outpouring of support for the American Samoa Community Cancer Coalition’s 4th annual ‘Swing Into Action to Drive Cancer Out’ golf tourney fundraiser held on August 8th.

Sixty golf team and 43 hole sponsorships were collected. Fifty-six in-kind donations were received, as well as $11,255 in donations. Over 750 raffle books were sold. The net total raised is $50,000! And every penny will be distributed to local (resident) cancer patients and survivors in American Samoa.

While this is only the fourth tournament, the Cancer Coalition has been raising funds for patients since 2006. Through March 2020, we have assisted 375 patients, and distributed 509 stipends (recipients may reapply annually), totaling over $200,000.00. The average age of a stipend recipient at diagnosis is 53, and at least half are diagnosed with metastatic or late-stage cancer.

While the stipend amounts, which range from $500 to $750 per applicant, are meager compared to the enormous expense of cancer treatment and survivorship, every patient and/or family member expresses a deep, and often tearful, thank you to the stipend donors. These stipends provide financial help and acknowledge their plight, offering a glimmer of hope — assuring them that they are not alone.

They have an entire community supporting them.
