Under 19 Baseball team makes stronger show, scores first runs of tour

Although the American Samoa Under 19 Boys Baseball Team was downed for the second straight time in an exhibition match, they had a good rally, as they went up against the  St. George-Area High School Desert Hills Under 19 team at Dixie State’s Bruce Hurt Field in Utah. At games end, they were defeated by a score of 10-5.

According to a press release, the American Samoa Under 19 Team continued its performance on Thursday, with the team opening the bottom of the fourth inning with two consecutive batters reaching base. Both runners would score, giving the team its first scores of their summer tour. They scored three more in the bottom of the fifth to get within five runs, but Desert Hills snuffed out the rally to close out the American Samoa Under 19 Team, 10-5.

Desert Hills, which challenged for its Regional Championship during the high school season, used their experience to take themselves to a 9-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning.

In their first game this past Wednesday, the American Samoa team was downed by a Region 9 All-Star Team with a score of 12-0.

Yesterday, American Samoa played against Pine View, which is a high school team from the area. Samoa News was not able to retrieve the score of that game as of press time.

“The team is getting stronger each day, as this has been a great learning experience for the boys,” said the head of the American Samoa Baseball Association and coach of the American Samoa Under 19 Baseball Team, Victor Langkilde.

The American Samoa team is anticipating 20 plus games during the three week tour of Utah and Canada.

They are scheduled to take this weekend off with no games being played, but will resume action next week during the Fourth of July holiday.

The American Samoa team will be in Utah until Saturday, July 7, where they will then be traveling to Canada to play against other ‘Under 19’ teams until mid July.
