Matagi David Sialega Mauga has joined his brother Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga in the political arena after winning the Special Election to the seat for District No. 6 Sua #2 last Friday. However, it should be noted that these are the unofficial results, with official results occurring after seven days.

The special election was held due to the sudden passing of Lemapu Suiaunoa Talo in January 2015, who had initially won the seat in the general election last year November.

House District #6, Sua #2  is composed of the villages of Sailele, Masausi, Masefau and Afono. Mauga won 168 votes or 47.6% while Limutau  F. C Limutau received 146 votes or 41.4% and Filia’e Eliapo, 39 votes or 11%.

Mauga is one of the investigators with the Attorney General’s office.

According to Chief Election Officer Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, the special election was smooth and everything went well as expected, with nothing out of the ordinary. He said the ballots were closed at 6p.m. with unofficial results aired an hour later.

According to the results from the election office:

For Masefau: Filia’e Eliapo 38, Limutau F.C. Limutau 103, Matagi David Sialega Mauga 13; 

For Masausi/Sailelei: Filia'e Eliapo 1, Limutau F.C. Limutau 24,  Matagi David Sialega Mauga 27;

For Afono: Filia’e Eliapo 0; Limutau F.C. Limutau 19 and Matagi David Sialega Mauga 128.

Samoa News notes that Limutau is a former House member from the same House District #6 and currently the Market Place manager, and Matagi was the only other candidate running against Lemapu during last November’s general election.
