ROTARY HOLDS ANNUAL CHANGEOVER NIGHT

The Rotary Club of Pago Pago held their annual Changeover of Club Officers for the 2015-2016 Club year at the Sadie Thompson Inn last Saturday evening.

The banquet was well attended with member’s family and friends. In addition to introduction of the incoming Club Officers, Past President, Mrs. Jacqueline Hall was honored and recognized as the Club's newest Paul Harris Fellow and Past President and Treasurer Jim Mahoney was recognized as Rotarian of the Year.

Rotarian of the Year is awarded to recognize the individual Rotarian who has demonstrated exemplary service to the Rotary Club of Pago Pago in the previous year.

The prestigious Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The Paul Harris Fellow was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.

WOMEN’S HOSPITAL AUXILIARY DONATION

The Women’s Hospital Auxiliary (WHA) has done it again. Earlier this week, the group donated a check of $2,025 to the Pediatric Clinic of the LBJ Medical Center.

The donation was accepted by Dr. Seakerise Tuato’o, the Chief of Internal Medicine, and Dr. James Marrone, Chief of Pediatrics at LBJ.

Dr. Tuato’o was unable to hide his emotions, pausing at times during his remarks to hold back tears and regain composure. “Anything this hospital wants and needs, the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary has never failed to come through,” a grateful Dr. Tuato’o said. The WHA comprises volunteer workers, who sell sandwiches and other goodies at their Fale at LBJ. Money earned is used only for hospital needs.

TODAY IS YOUTH SUMMIT DAY

Today, hundreds of young people are expected to gather at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center in Utulei for the 2015 Youth Summit Day, hosted by NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS). The event officially culminates a series of summer programs including the Ocean Science Ocean Swimming (OSOS) for high school students and the Ocean Star program for the youngsters.

NMSAS outreach and education coordinator Apulu Veronika Molio’o Mortenson is inviting everyone to join in the fun today, to celebrate the achievements of this year’s summer program participants and to gain an appreciation of marine life through demonstrations that will include songs, music videos, and a fashion show that utilizes recyclable materials.

The goal of the summer programs, according to Apulu, is to help spread the word about the importance of marine life and the environment, and to promote conservation.
