Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The American Samoa Government has issued a stern warning to all travelers concerning the legality of marijuana products within the territory. This cautionary notice is crucial for anyone planning to visit American Samoa.

In a public announcement by the American Samoa Department of Homeland Security, travelers are explicitly informed that all forms of marijuana, including but not limited to THC vape pens, edibles, and various other prohibited controlled substances, are strictly illegal to import into American Samoa. This prohibition extends to any marijuana-related products, regardless of their legal status in certain U.S. states where they may be permitted.

It's important to understand that laws governing marijuana usage and possession vary significantly between jurisdictions. Therefore, travelers must recognize that the legality of these substances in their home states does not apply in American Samoa. Anyone planning to enter the territory must thoroughly research and comply with local laws before arrival.

According to the American Samoa Code Annotated (A.S.C.A.) § 13.1022, possession of controlled substances is considered a felonious act. The legal repercussions are severe. For a first offense, individuals could face 5 to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000. A second offense carries significantly higher penalties, including up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000. A third offense carries even harsher consequences, potentially resulting in 30 years in prison and fines up to $40,000.

Furthermore, travelers attempting to bring illegal substances into American Samoa may encounter serious legal ramifications, including the confiscation of their items, immediate arrest, and subsequent criminal prosecution.

Recognize that what may be lawful in other regions can carry severe penalties here. Therefore, all visitors must be fully aware of and respect the laws of American Samoa before embarking on their journey to the territory.
