France Whips Samoa 31-17, day 2 in Las Vegas

France scored five tries against Samoa to register its first win of the tournament, 31-17 on Saturday, the second day of the International Rugby Board sevens tourney played at Las Vegas Sam Boyd Stadium.

Samoa managed to cross the end zone three times for its second loss in pool C matches.  France led Samoa at halftime, 12-5.  The Samoans missed a lot of tackles and ball handling was poor.  There was no urgency in their play and looked disoriented many times while the French kept pushing and applying pressure.

Both teams will now be playing in the Bowl competition, which will start late Saturday afternoon.  In other results, Kenya showed strength and skills as it dismantled a well balanced New Zealand team, 22-0 in their last match of pool A.

Fiji continued its impressive comeback from its first loss of the tournament to Samoa on day one with a hard tough and close victory against Argentina, 15-12.

Both teams have advanced from their group to the Cup rounds on Sunday.  Kenya and New Zealand have also booked their places in the knockout rounds as well as Australia and South Africa.  Two more teams will join the elite Cup quarterfinalists at the end of day two competition in Boyd Stadium.

Other results from Friday: Australia 35, Japan 5, Scotland 24, England 14.  Saturday’s results: Russia 31, Portugal 0, Kenya 22, New Zealand 0, France 31 Samoa 17, Fiji 15 Argentina 12.
