Colorado Springs, COLORADO — One of the most memorable days in a student-athlete's career is signing a National Letter of Intent.

But with ongoing coronavirus concerns it was clear that many seniors would not have the opportunity to celebrate signing day with coaches, peers and teammates.

For two days a 15-car convoy drove from house to house in District 20 in Colorado Springs, Colorado delivering signs, hand-written letters and treats to Liberty High School signees. The convoy of teachers, administrators, coaches and friends traveled to 15 different houses Thursday and Friday honoring each athlete with a chorus of car horns and cheers while practicing social distancing.

Katelyn Samalaulu Nomura Lopez McMoore missed an extra-special signing celebration with her school as she signed a National Letter of Intent as a DUAL-sport athlete, picking University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) for volleyball and track & field.

 “My main goal going into high school was to try to continue both of my sports and get a scholarship for both sports,” McMoore said. “So this was so special. I really wasn’t expecting this at all, especially with these hard times and really not being able to see many people.”

McMoore is a senior at Liberty High School of Colorado Springs, Colorado with a 3.9 GPA. The volleyball 5’9 has an approach jump of 9’10” and wicked fast arm swing. McMoore’s strongest positions are middle blocker and outside hitter; however, she plays all the way around as a year-round two sport athlete, and served both dual leading roles as captain of both her volleyball and track & field teams with fierceness and gratitude.

McMoore is the eldest daughter of US Army Retired Veteran Chief Warrant Officer III Tomi McMoore of Leloaloa and Utulei and mother Lourdes Lopez McMoore of Puerto Rico and grew up as a “military brat” easily adapting to change.

McMoore’s goal is to earn a Business Administration degree while being able to do what she loves, playing sports and continuously thanks God, her parents, aiga, school and community for ongoing prayers and support through the years.
