55-year-old woman arrested for assaulting elderly family member

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A 55-year-old woman from Samoa accused of assaulting a 76-year-old woman was arrested by police last week.

Fiatamali’i Solomona made her initial appearance in District Court last week.

She is charged with one count of abuse of an elderly or disable adult involving domestic violence, a class C felony, punishable by a term of imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of up to $5,000, but not less than $150, pursuant to A.S.C.A 47.0402, or both.

Bail is set at $5,000.

THE CASE

On Mar. 4, 2021 around 8:39pm in Nu’uuli, a young woman called the Tafuna Police Substation (TPS) to report that her aunt, Fiatamali’i Solomona (the defendant in this matter) assaulted her mother by scratching her multiples time on the left arm, causing bruising and bleeding.

The victim is 76 years old and is not able to physically move. EMS personnel were contacted and the victim was treated.

The daughter (who reported the incident) and the victim’s son who witnesses the alleged assault stated to police that the defendant had assaulted their mother (victim) because of some family issues.

The defendant was then processed at the TPS and confined at the Territorial Correctional Facility (TCF).
