Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata attended the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning, a yearly bipartisan tradition since 1953 when President Eisenhower attended at the suggestion of evangelist Billy Graham and gave remarks at a prayer breakfast with Members of Congress.

This year’s official event returned to the U.S. Capitol, and included a smaller group of several hundred mostly Members of Congress with light breakfast food. President Biden spoke, urging Americans to see each other as neighbors, and was seated by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. The event planning was led by former Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark.

“I’ve appreciated the National Prayer Breakfast for years, attended whenever I could, and been there most years since I’ve been in Congress,” said Aumua Amata. “I always think it’s a beautiful event. It’s good to see many Members of Congress and the administration participating and making it a meaningful effort.”

“The prayers led by clergy and others are for the guidance of leaders, the well-being of our nation, thankfulness, the protection of our Service Members, and of course, peace,” she continued. “I appreciate each one who took part, and I am especially thankful to know that in American Samoa our people take these themes of prayer and faith and love for others seriously.”
