Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — American Samoa is being allocated more than $3 million in funding from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support expanding COVID-19 testing and vaccination activities.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced late last week in a national news release about two upcoming actions by the CDC to provide more than $22 billion in funding to states, localities, and territories in support of the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as directed by the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act 2021.

According to the federal agency, funding will provide critical support for testing and vaccination-related activities to jurisdictions before Jan. 19th. And consistent with Congressional direction, funds will be allocated by a population-based formula.

The CDC’s funding list shows that American Samoa is being allocated more than $2.84 million in funding for COVID-19 testing and $1 million for COVID-19 vaccination activities. (See www.cdc.gov for complete list and more details.)

Jurisdictions will be required to comply with terms and conditions of the awards when issued, said CDC.

“This funding is another timely investment that will strengthen our nation’s efforts to stop the COVID-19 pandemic in America,” CDC Director Robert R. Redfield is quoted in the news release. “Particularly now, it is crucial that states and communities have the resources they need to conduct testing, and to distribute and administer safe, high-quality COVID-19 vaccines safely and equitably.”
