Dept. of Homeland Security dedicates new vessel
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A new vessel that will aid in protecting and maintaining American Samoa’s coastal areas was dedicated by the local Dept. of Homeland Security this past Monday, April 15.
Director Samana Ve’ave’a provided details regarding the vessel, which was made possible through two grants. The vessel, named Mata’ala, is captained by Aukuso Paulo and co-captained by Robert Faumuina. Director Samana noted that the vessel's base cost amounted to $346,000, but with additional features, the total expenditure reached around $412,000.
Additionally, ASDHS acquired two new drones for mapping and surveying while awaiting a third drone capable of nocturnal surveillance. The collective expenditure for the drones totaled $79,862.70.
Governor Lemanu P.S. Mauga delivered special remarks during the ceremony, saying in part, "This is a great success, a culmination of prayers and hard work. The vessel will assist ASDHS in fulfilling its coastal responsibilities, ensuring safety and security for our endangered community members." The governor also emphasized the importance of caution and efficiency to the staff, while extending his congratulations to ASDHS for acquiring drones to enhance their operations.
After Governor Lemanu's special remarks, PC Mauga T. Asuega had the honor of cutting the ribbon and guests were then given the opportunity to take a ride on the boat.
In addition to Governor Lemanu and PC Mauga, others present included Papalii Laulii Alofa, Coast Guard Lieutenant Mike Spotifino, Consul Brian Fata Kaio, and Director of ASDHS Samana Ve’ave’a, along with his staff and several other directors.
