Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Education director, Dr. Ruth Matagi-Tofiga confirmed yesterday that the local Education Department (ASDOE) is offering summer tutoring for students that have been identified needing additional assistance.

The director told a cabinet meeting about two months ago that ASDOE offers summer tutoring programs for students who need additional assistance to meet their required scores including seniors needing the required credits to get their diploma.

She also said counselors and principals were working on identifying those students. This was important as schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and classes were carried out online and by other means.

The director said yesterday that Elementary Summer Tutoring will run from June 29 to July 30; Secondary Summer Tutoring from June 29 to July 17; ECE Summer Tutoring from June 29 to July 24: and SPED and ESY from June 29th to July 24.

For seniors who need to get required credits, summer tutoring is from June 29 to July 30th.

Matagi-Tofiga also said that ASDOE would hold the Teachers Summer Technology Institute from June 29 to July 24 while registrations for new students will start July 20.

“The new school year 2020/2021 will begin August 31 for students,” she said, noting that new teacher induction is set for Aug. 17-21 and all teachers begin the new school year on Aug. 24th.
