Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Health has reported a significant rise in cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and is urging residents to take preventive measures to mitigate its spread.

RSV is a highly contagious virus that typically manifests with symptoms similar to those of the common cold. Key symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, persistent cough, wheezing, fever, decreased appetite, and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

This virus poses a particular threat to vulnerable populations, including infants, older adults, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, as they are at a higher risk of developing severe complications.

To help reduce the transmission of RSV within the community, the Department of Health recommends several effective strategies:

1.      **Frequent Handwashing:** Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or caring for someone who is sick. If soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

2.      **Cough and Sneeze Hygiene:** Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing to prevent droplets from spreading. Dispose of used tissues immediately.

3.      **Sanitization of Surfaces:** Regularly clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices to eliminate potential virus particles.

4.      **Avoid Close Contact:** Minimize close interactions with individuals who are showing signs of illness. If possible, keep a safe distance from anyone displaying cold or flu-like symptoms.

5.      **Limit Crowd Exposure:** To protect infants and others at risk, avoid exposing them to crowded places, especially during RSV season when the virus is more prevalent.

6.      **Stay Home When Unwell:** If you or your child experience symptoms consistent with RSV or any other illness, it is crucial to stay home and avoid contact with others to prevent spreading the virus further.

By following these recommendations, we can work together to reduce the incidence of RSV and protect our community's health, according to the Dept. of Health.
