Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — As of Aug. 30th, the U.S Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided a total of over $1.086 billion to more than 165,000 people in states and territories to assist with COVID-19-related funeral costs for deaths occurring on or after Jan. 20, 2020.

Of that total, FEMA data shows that $9,000 has been approved for American Samoa where “less than 10” applications were submitted. No other public information is available on the applicants from American Samoa.

“Eligibility determinations are not driven by state or location; instead, they are based on when the applicant submits all required documentation,” according to FEMA.

Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.

Applicants may apply by calling 844-684-6333 (TTY: 800-462-7585) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.  Additional information about COVID-19 funeral assistance, including frequently asked questions, is available at FEMA.gov.
