Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — ASG and federal offices, as well as the majority of local businesses — including the banks — will be closed tomorrow, July 4th, in observance of the Fourth of July, or Independence Day holiday for the United States.

StarKist Samoa will have the day off tomorrow, but the cannery is planning to operation product on Saturday, July 7th, says StarKist Samoa official, Taotasi Archie Soliai.

The only major event planned so far for tomorrow is the Independence Day Fireworks at Utulei Beach from 6p.m. to 9pm, organized by Bluesky Communications, Matson Shipping, and the Pago Pago Trading Company. Organizers say food, games and music will be a part of the event.

The fireworks are also included as one of the activities for the Governor’s 2018 Youth Empowerment Summit, which closes today at the Pago Pago Youth Center.

Many residents are hopeful for good weather tomorrow, following strong winds, rough seas and at times rain, over the past four days.

In line with calling the youth summit, Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga has also proclaimed July as Youth Month, saying that “American Samoa’s most valuable resource is its people including our youth, upon which we rely as vital community assets and resources, having their unique knowledge, idealism, skills, perspectives, ideas, and creativity, that contribute to their awareness, service, advocacy, and philanthropy.”

He called on all government, private, church, and nonprofit organizations to “recognize the significance of the youth of the Territory to our future well-being, and craft, implement, and evaluate programs to assist in their development.”

In observance of the 4th of July, Samoa News will not publish tomorrow and the office will be close.
