Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In proclaiming May 2021 to be “Older Americans Month” in American Samoa, Gov. Lemanu Peleti Palepoi Sialega Mauga “urged every member of our community to take time this month to honor our older adults and the professionals, family members, volunteers and caregivers who are there for them.”

“Our recognition and involvement with older American Samoans can enrich our entire island community’s qualify of life,” the governor said in is May 11th proclamation, saying that every May, the federal agency, Administration for Community Living (ACL), leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month, under the theme “Communities of Strength”.

“Older adults have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes, failures, joys and difficulties,” the proclamation stated, adding that “their stories and contributions help to support and inspire others.”

The Administration for Community Living is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

During the Lolo Administration, a special day towards the end of May was designated with activities for senior citizens. It was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

No information at press time as to whether the Lemanu Administration will do the same with a special day for our senior citizens.
