Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Medical teams from the U.S. Army’s United States Army Hospital (USAH) worked hand-in-hand recently with LBJ Hospital doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers. This opportunity to share knowledge and expertise helped strengthen the care the hospital provides, while also building closer ties with the U.S. military.

The special exchange program that took place from September 16 to 26, 2024, was designed to share medical expertise, strengthen health services, and build lasting relationships, all while supporting the community in American Samoa.

According to a LBJ Hospital press release, the initiative, led by COL Al Giwa, 9th MSC Command Surgeon, began in October 2023 as a ‘thank-you’ to LBJ for its ongoing support of the 9th MSC soldiers.

The health exchange involved 9th Mission Support instructors providing the LBJ staff with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training, helping them renew important certifications that ensure they’re ready to handle emergency situations. Additionally, Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) instructors helped LBJ nurses earn continuing education credits, keeping them up to date with the latest in trauma care techniques. In addition free dental treatment was offered to 9th MSC soldiers living in our local community, ensuring they received essential care.

This exchange wasn’t just about sharing medical knowledge—it was about building relationships, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that everyone, from soldiers to civilians, receives the best care possible.

The LBJ Tropical Medical Center extended its heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the U.S. Army 9th MSC and all involved for their dedication and hard work. “Together, we are stronger, and this health exchange is a excellent example of what we can achieve when we unite our efforts for the good of our community and we look forward to future collaborations,” the press release concluded.
