Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — No critical disruptions to services were reported as a result of the power outage at the hospital on Monday this week.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the LBJ hospital.

“No critical disruptions to services was the report given to LBJ Hospital CEO Moefa’auo William Emmsley during the brief power outage on Monday, Jan. 31, 2023.

“Commercial power went out at 8:51 PM, and a minute later the automatic transfer switch shifted the load to LBJ’s emergency generator, providing power to the core areas – ICU, NICU, Operating Room, Labor & Delivery and the wards.”

The statement says that the power came back online five minutes later and the switch transferred power back to its regular source.

“There was a delay in the load synchronization as usually the generator kicks in within seconds.

“LBJ’s engineering department and ASPA technicians are going over that slight interval to make sure that the transfer switch occurs within seconds, but at a minimum of two minutes, 30 seconds.

“Although there are no minimum requirements for when the transfer switch shifts the load to the emergency standby generator, LBJ sets its standards at three minutes max.

“During that minute when the load was being transferred to the generator, emergency lights were on in all areas, but no disturbances or major problems were reported from the core areas.”
