LBJ reports one new COVID-related death bringing total to 30

Spread continues on Ta’u with 11 new cases

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Health Department’s COVID-19 Situational Report for May 9, shows another COVID-19 related death recorded by LBJ Medical Center, with the fatalities relating to the deadly virus now totaling 30 individuals.  No other information was available about the new fatality, except that the individual is unvaccinated.

Also on May 9, a total of 17 new positive cases were reported from DoH clinics and LBJ, putting the cumulative community spread of COVID total at 5,930 since the outbreak began on Feb. 22. Furthermore DoH is monitoring 142 active cases, which includes 32 on Ta’u island in Manu’a.

According to DoH, all individuals testing positive throughout the territory are directed to 10 days of Home Isolation. The DoH EpiNet team will continue to work closely with medical teams to monitor them closely until they are cleared.

Furthermore, Ta’u Island remains under strict restrictions until further notice, while the island of Ofu and Olosega in Manu’a remain COVID free. 

In the Manu’a COVID-19 surge report, on May 9, DoH reports 11 new positive cases with six at Faleasao village and 5 at Ta’u village. The new cases bring the island group’s cumulative total to 46 (31 in Faleasao village and 15 at Ta’ village) since the first cases were recorded towards the end of last month on Ta’u island.

Manu’a currently has 32 active cases — all on Ta’u island— that are  being monitored by DoH, with 19 at Faleasao and 14 at Ta’u village, said DoH’s Manu’a report.
