Locally produced meat products from Samoa now permitted in American Samoa

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The American Samoa Government, Department of Agriculture has advised the Samoa Government Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, that locally produced raw and cooked meat, and meat products from Samoa are now allowed into American Samoa for personal consumption and funerals.

The public is hereby advised of the following conditions:

1. A person who intends to take any locally produced raw or cooked meat to American Samoa must, within 24 hours of travel, take the meat/meat products to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Quarantine Division at Matautu-tai for inspection. Inspections are free of charge.

2. Where an inspection approves the meat/meat products for export, a fee of SAT$10.00 must be paid to the Quarantine Division for issuance of a Sanitary Certificate.

3. The Certificate shall confirm that:

  • the raw or cooked meat/meat products are free from pests and diseases and is safe for human consumption; and
  • the amount and type of raw and/or cooked meat, which must not exceed the limits specified below. 

  1. 4. The American Samoa Department of Agriculture has the sole discretion to determine the issuance of an Import Permit for the raw or cooked meat subject to their own terms and conditions of independent inspection.

The maximum limit for raw and/or cooked meat for personal consumption or funerals from Samoa to American Samoa is as follows:

FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION ONLY:

Cooked meat — Unlimited quantity

Raw meat, raw or cooked Samoan sausage — 100 lbs/45 kg*

FOR FAMILY FUNERALS:

Raw meat, raw or cooked Samoan sausage — 300 lbs/136 kg*

* Limits are per person traveling alone or a family traveling together

An import permit costs per consignment weighing from 1 to 20 lbs. (up to 9kg) is USD$10; and any additional amount of meat at $0.10 per pound/per 0.45kg.

This arrangement will be effective January 1, 2020.
