Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On September 18, 2026, the Fagatogo Central Police Station (FPS) received a call from a man reporting that his brother was allegedly assaulted by Molesi Toala.

The suspect was later charged with Count 1: Assault in the Second Degree, a class D felony punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, a fine not to exceed $5,000, or both imprisonment and fine.

The defendant was held without bail.

According to the court records, the matter was brought to the attention of authorities after the victim's brother contacted police and reported that his sibling had allegedly been assaulted by Toala. Police officers responded to the village of Aoa to investigate the reported assault.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were met by five male individuals, including the victim and a witness to the alleged incident.

According to the report, the individuals directed officers toward the victim, who stood up and immediately expressed his desire to have Toala arrested for allegedly assaulting him.

Officers proceeded to interview the victim at the scene to determine what had occurred.

VICTIM'S STATEMENT

During his interview with investigators, the victim explained that he had recently completed a job for a friend who worked as a bus driver.

After finishing the work, he reportedly walked to a nearby faleo'o, a small Samoan hut, where he intended to rest and take a nap.

While he was resting inside the hut, he suddenly felt a powerful blow to his body from what appeared to be a heavy object. The victim told investigators that he had been struck once and was caught off guard by the unexpected attack.

He immediately turned around to see who had struck him and reportedly observed Toala walking away from the area while carrying a large tree branch.

The victim further stated that he did not know why Toala had allegedly assaulted him. He told police that he had not done anything wrong toward the suspect and was unaware of any disagreement or problem between them that could have led to the incident.

During the interview, the victim also acknowledged that he had consumed alcoholic beverages earlier in the day, before the alleged assault occurred.

Police noted in their report that the victim appeared intoxicated and experienced some difficulty explaining the incident clearly.

However, investigators observed that despite his intoxicated condition, the victim remained in control of himself and was able to communicate with officers.

While speaking with investigators, the victim pointed toward a large tree branch lying along the roadside, and identified the branch as the object Toala allegedly used to strike him.

Officers subsequently recovered the branch and placed it inside the police unit as part of their investigation.

After obtaining the victim's account, officers asked whether he required medical assistance. The victim agreed to receive medical attention and was assisted into a police patrol vehicle.

He was then transported to the FPS for medical help.

WITNESS'S STATEMENT

As officers were preparing to leave the scene, another man approached investigators and informed them that he had witnessed the alleged assault.

According to the witness, he observed Toala walking quickly toward the small hut where the victim was resting.

The witness told police that Toala was carrying a large tree branch as he approached the hut. He said that the suspect did not look at him or say anything while walking toward the victim.

According to the witness's account, Toala approached the victim and struck him forcefully on the back with the branch. The witness described the blow as a hard strike.

After allegedly hitting the victim, Toala reportedly walked away without saying anything and returned toward his residence.

The witness's account supported the victim's allegation that Toala had approached him while he was resting and struck him with a tree branch.

The witness did not describe any argument or confrontation immediately preceding the alleged assault.

The victim also maintained that he was unaware of any reason for the suspect's actions.

THE VICTIM

Upon arriving at the FPS, the victim was met by EMS personnel, who were waiting to assess his condition.

During the medical assessment, personnel observed a large red mark on the left side of the victim's back. The injury was consistent with the area where the victim reported being struck by the tree branch. An officer photographed the visible injury to document the victim's condition as part of the investigation.

Following the assessment, the victim was transported back to the village of Aoa.

Before he was released, officers advised him to maintain his distance from Toala while police continued their investigation and attempted to locate the suspect. The victim was also informed to await further information regarding the matter.

According to the report, Toala was not located during the officers' initial response to the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the reason for the alleged attack, remained unclear in the police report.

The defendant is identified as a 23-year-old U.S national.

The affidavit was filed in the District Court on Sept. 24, 2026.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations outlined in court filings remain accusations at this stage, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
