Man charged with assaulting his wife after her mother turns him in

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man accused of assaulting his wife appeared in Court last week. He’s charged with third degree assault and private peace disturbance. The government alleges that around 8:30p.m, May 28th, a woman called police regarding her daughter allegedly being assaulted by her husband.

According to the victim’s mother, she was at home when she heard her daughter screaming for help from their other house where her daughter and husband live. She said she rushed over and saw her daughter’s husband (defendant) choking his wife (victim) with one hand, while holding a rock in his other hand to his wife’s forehead.

The defendant then left the house and ran out into the dark when he heard his wife’s aunty yelling at him. While leaving, the defendant allegedly told his wife he would kill her when he returns home.

When interviewed by police, the victim said her husband cussed at her and accused her of using him to feed her family, and he knows she’s having an affair with another man from the church.

The victim told police that as she was trying to calm her husband down, but he started throwing punches at her in front of their kids. She said she pushed him away but he grabbed a rock and put it to her forehead while he used his other hand to choke her. For her safety, the victim requested police to detain her husband because he threatened to assault her again when he comes home.

The defendant was apprehended and taken into custody. Before the defendant was transported to the police station for questioning, police searched him for weapons and contraband and discovered a glass pipe containing white crystalline substance inside.

When questioned about the incident, the defendant told police that he was sick and tired of his wife and her mother’s lies while they both knew what happened. He did not wish to offer more information. He only admitted that he assaulted his wife out of anger.

When questioned about the glass pipe containing meth, he told police he got the glass pipe from his supplier. He refused to reveal the name of his supplier.

The defendant made his initial appearance in court last month. He is charged with one count of unlawful possessions of meth, an unclassified felony, punishable by term of imprisonment from 5-10 years, a fine of up to $20,000; along with 3rd degree assault and disturbing the private peace involving domestic violence, both class A misdemeanors.

Bail is set at $5,000 and preliminary is set for next meek.
