Former Department of Human Resources Director, Le’i Sonny Thompson has been appointed as designated Acting Police Commissioner, according to Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga’s latest appointments released yesterday afternoon.

Lolo had initially appointed in a Dec. 30 memo, former police commissioner Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, who was sworn in to office on Tuesday as one of the three senators for Ma’oputasi County.

Tuaolo has represented Pago Pago for the past two years in the Senate, while Le’i has served as DHR director in the first-four years of the Lolo Administration.

Also yesterday, the governor appointed former Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources Director Dr. Ruth Matagi-Tofiga as designated Acting Education Department director.

DOE was previously headed by Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin-Finau who stepped down for an unsuccessful bid for American Samoa Delegate seat in the US House.

In other appointments, the governor reappointed Faleosina Voigt to head the Public Works Department; Taeaoafua Dr. Meki Solomona for the Department of Human and Social Services; and Douglas Fiaui for the post of Public Defender.

All appointments are designated Acting Directors and subject to official nomination and confirmation by the Fono. Samoa News understands that more cabinet appoinments are expected out today and early next week.
