OBGYN team committed to providing guidance and support to mothers

lbj training for expectant mothers

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Chief of the OBGYN Unit at LBJ Hospital, says the hospital’s prenatal education program is an effective method for equipping expectant mothers with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood.

Now, the LBJ Tropical Medical Center (LBJTMC) along with the OBGYN’s Dr. Efren N. Yuchongco, is introducing the Expectant Mother’s Wellness Program — a comprehensive program encompassing guided Labor and Maternity ward tours and educational sessions on breastfeeding, nutrition, and physical fitness explicitly tailored for pregnant mothers.

The LBJ OBGYN team responsible for managing this new program consists of doctors, nurses, dietitians, physical therapists, WIC program specialists, and a lactation consultant.

“This new program is designed specifically for mothers at the LBJ OB Clinic,” Dr Yuchongco said. “Our dedicated OBGYN team is committed to providing guidance and support to mothers on self-care and the care of newborns or unborn babies.”

LBJ OBGYN is excited to offer an engaging orientation and guided tour of their Labor, Nursery, and Maternity Ward every Monday.

This program is tailored for first-time mothers and those unfamiliar with child birth. During these sessions, they are provided an in-depth education on various aspects of labor, including behavioral expectations, pain management techniques, and the labor room experience, as well as guidance on the pushing and safe delivery of your child.

After the baby is born, a new procedure will be introduced: waiting before clamping the umbilical cord.

This will help ensure that the baby continues to receive blood from the mother. Once the cord is clamped, the baby will be placed on the mother's skin to encourage bonding.

Breastfeeding is initiated upon the baby's birth, and this practice pertains to infants born through expected delivery with healthy mothers.

A breastfeeding education session has been scheduled on Tuesdays.

This session is significant because it emphasizes the importance of breast milk as the optimal choice for infant nutrition, promoting both health and safety.

Further, a collaboration between the OBGYN team and professionals from the WIC office has been established to conduct comprehensive and insightful presentations centered on the invaluable topic of breastfeeding. These sessions aim to provide thorough information and guidance on the benefits and techniques of breastfeeding for expectant and new mothers.

The nutritional education session will take place on Thursdays.

This session is essential for the community, as it emphasizes the critical impact of our dietary decisions. The focus of the nutrition session will be on highlighting the significance of breastfeeding for mothers and shedding light on the crucial role of diet in maternal health.

LBJ OBGYN will also host a specialized fitness education and exercise session on Fridays tailored for expectant mothers.

Fathers are encouraged to attend. During this session, qualified physical therapists with expertise in fitness for pregnant women will provide guidance and support. The main objective is to promote a healthy and safe delivery for both mother and baby.

The upcoming sessions for the newly introduced program will be held in the LBJ conference room.
