Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — With boat transportation limited to Aunu’u due to rough seas, Port Administration issued a press release on Thursday updating the Aunu’u Wharf Reconstruction Project. As presented during the community meeting held on February 19, 2026, at Pago Plaza, the project will replace the existing wharf and boat ramp with an enhanced design at the current location. As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) progresses through the 35% design phase, an Environmental Assessment is being conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The assessment will evaluate potential impacts on the environment, marine species, and wildlife.

The new facility is being designed to support both inter-island passenger transportation through the Alia and cargo operations utilizing landing craft vessels. The estimated construction cost is $3.7 million, with construction anticipated to begin the latter part of 2027 and be completed before 2029.

"This project represents a significant investment in the future of Aunu'u and demonstrates our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and resilient maritime infrastructure for our island communities," said Barney Sene, Director of PAAS. "The reconstructed wharf will improve transportation access, strengthen the movement of people and goods, and support the long-term needs of Aunu'u residents for generations to come."

This important infrastructure modernization effort will restore safe, reliable, and long-term maritime access to Aunu'u Island, supporting the community's daily transportation, commerce, and overall well-being for decades to come.

The next steps of the project include the public release of the Environmental Assessment this June, accompanied by a virtual public meeting. An in-person public meeting is also planned for August 2026 on Aunu'u Island to announce the geotechnical survey and present the 65% design for additional public review and comment.

Additional details regarding the Environmental Assessment and upcoming public meetings will be announced soon.
