Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Territorial Bank of American Samoa (TBAS) announced via a press release, a long awaited debit card, which, it says is “taking American Samoa online”.

The bank’s new partnership with Mastercard, “raises local banking and finance standards to international levels through its new TBAS Debit Mastercard card.”

The new bank card is the first EMV chip-enabled technology bank card available in American Samoa, offering the highest levels of payment security and a wide range of ways to access bank account funds or pay for purchases.

The cards also feature Mastercard contactless technology, which allows TBAS customers to make fast, secure, cashless and more convenient payments for everyday purchases by simply tapping their card against enabled payment terminals. Contactless payments are ideal for quick payment environments where speed and convenience matter most – from major retail stores, to convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies, bars and restaurants.

The TBAS Debit Mastercard card can be used in American Samoa at local Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) as well as paying for purchases directly at 200 retail stores. Customers can also make online purchases, international payments, and access their bank account and make immediate payments while traveling overseas. The TBAS Debit Mastercard card is accepted at millions of locations worldwide.

“Launching our TBAS Debit Mastercard card is one of our first major deliverables to become the leading bank in American Samoa,” states Dave Buehler, President and CEO of TBAS. “TBAS is honored to deliver the Island’s first chip-enabled bank card, to not only provide more security to our customers, but to offer our customers new ways of purchasing items, making payments and providing the most convenient banking products for our People.”

Importantly, the new cards will allow locals in American Samoa to use online payment systems through new local mobile Apps, supporting the growing number of new and innovative business applications that require online purchasing.

“Recent global events have demonstrated the power of the digital economy in sustaining and supporting communities during these challenging times,” said Ruth Riviere, Country Manager for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands at Mastercard. “We are incredibly excited to partner with TBAS to launch its new Debit Mastercard card, providing thousands of American Samoans access to the benefits of the digital economy and secure online payments alongside a new, simple, safe and more convenient way to pay for purchases in store.”
