Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man who was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol is now charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, to wit; methamphetamine, a class D felony.

Wesley Tugaga made his initial appearance in District Court this past Monday; however, District Court Judge Fiti Sunia continued his case to Thursday morning, so the government could file the additional charge against him.

Tugaga is represented by Assistant Public Defender Anna Wells while prosecuting the case is Assistant Attorney General Laura Garvey.

Sunia established Tugaga’s bond at $2,000 cash.

The government claims that Tugaga’s vehicle was pulled over during a traffic stop on the weekend, because he was not wearing a seat belt..

When Tugaga was being informed about why he was stopped, cops detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. Furthermore, officers observed Tugaga trying to reach the back seat of his vehicle.

Tugaga’s vehicle was impounded and during the search, cops discovered a glass pipe containing a white crystalline substance inside. The substance tested positive for meth.

Tugaga was scheduled to appear in court late last week for a preliminary examination.
