OP-ED: LEMANU AND TALAUEGA ROLL-OUT EDUCATION PLATFORM

Matu’u, AS, June 1, 2020 — Lemanu Palepoi Sialega Mauga and Talauega Eleasalo Va’alele Ale have rolled out their Education Platform and shared the following comments.

“We are pleased to present the second installment of our campaign platform highlighting another area of utmost importance to us — Education. We began with Health Care because we believe fundamentally in having a healthy society and exceptionally healthy children. Healthy children learn better and increase their chances of becoming positive contributing members of our community that support the development of a robust economy. Healthy and well-educated people have a direct impact on the future of our communities and economy.

Education will be prioritized in our administration, starting with teacher compensation and increasing student performance. We want to ensure that our educators, especially those that teach in the classroom, receive adequate compensation based on their credentials, years of service, and performance. Our best teachers should not have to leave the classroom for an administrator position to get a pay raise. We need to reward our best and effective teachers to remain in the classroom.

We want to increase funding towards scholarships to increase college opportunities for students willing to pursue those careers that are in great need within our territory. We need more engineers, doctors, accountants, licensed tradespeople, and other skilled workers. To do that, we must invest in strengthening our teachers' skills to be successful in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Another key focus we want to prioritize in our school systems is organized sports for all our school children. We need to integrate and support sports, arts, and music to promote healthy living and creativity.

We are committed to working with teachers, administrators, alumni, parents, and students to identify every opportunity to support and improve our school system so that 100% of our children are ready for colleges and careers when they graduate high school. That is an ambitious goal, but it is not impossible.

We are excited to talk to our people about education. We do not have all the answers, but we are committed to listening to all of our people’s ideas for a stronger and more successful education system.

Faafetai tele for your time. We look forward to your support and vote on November 3. Soifua.”
