ASBA 2016 Moso'oi Basketball Tournament: Registration deadline in September

Event is in collaboration with DYWA

The American Samoa Basketball Association (ASBA) in conjunction with the Department of Youth and Women Affairs (DWYA) is hosting this year’s Moso’oi Basketball Tournament, which will also serve as one of the trials to select an All-Star Team to represent American Samoa in upcoming international competition.

ASBA's Paul Amituana'i told Samoa News, while "the focus and purpose for this tournament is to improve and explore more talent within our community,” the tournament is also “another way for us to spot and select some of the local talent for both men and women for any upcoming international tournaments."

According to Amituana’i, registration for this year’s Moso'oi Basketball Tournament is now open to all players and teams, including village teams interested in being a part of this year’s event.

The registration fees for this year’s tournament are as follows:

 Kids Division: FREE, Under-18 Division— $75.00, 40 & Over Division— $100.00, Women’s Division— $100.00, and Men's Division— $250.00

Amituana'i said all games and events for ASBA Moso'oi Tournament will be hosted at the DYWA gymnasium, and the tournament event would most likely be a two-month process of action packed competition.

He said, the only change in this year’s tourney, from previous years, is that in the men’s division “the defense that we implement is man on man defense – as we are trying to improve our system compared to teams from all over the Pacific.”

According to Amituana'i, they will also have strict supervision of those who register and they'll be keeping an eye out for those who are overweight— he told Samoa News that those players who are over 300lbs are automatically eligible to play for the 40 & Over division.

He said, "The 40 & Over is a wellness program that we have started to target the obesity problem we have on island — I know for a fact that there are some overweight individuals out there who are talented in the sport of basketball, but they gave up on themselves and just let go, but this is an idea to bring them back out on the court, and hopefully polish up on their skills and hopefully improve their health.”

Amituana'i said, "For those of you who are interested in registering, when you come, please bring your photo ID with you to register — our registration deadline is September 2, 2016.

To register, you can contact ASBA President Milton Taufa'asau at 258-1054 or Vice President Diehl Langkilde at 731-4424 or Secretary Paulo Amituana'i at 733-5777.
