Washington, D.C. — Friday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed an education grant for Head Start of over $1.17 million through the U.S. Health and Human Services Department (HHS).

Specifically, the discretionary grant to the American Samoa Department of Education is for Head Start projects, an early childhood education program, at an amount of $1,170,572. As a national program, Head Start has been working with children for 55 years.

“Congratulations to our hardworking educators that help guide our students as they start out life’s journey,” said Aumua Amata. “Thank you especially to the project manager for this effort, Milaneta Tinitali.”

“Head Start is a good program that helps young children get an important foundation at an early age,” Amata continued. “Thank you to Director of Education Dr. Ruth Matagi-Tofiga for her leadership.”

Funded by Congress and administered through HHS, Head Start is the national commitment to give every child, regardless of circumstances at birth, an opportunity to succeed in school and in life. It is a comprehensive early education program for children birth to age 5, focused on early math and reading skills along with confidence and resilience to help children build abilities they need to be successful.
