Improving literacy in Samoa

The United States government is helping to improve English literacy in Samoan schools by donating US$15,058 (T$36,000) to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MESC).The grant will help fund a MESC Literacy Improvement Project that leverages existing efforts of Peace Corps Volunteers to provide English language education in rural primary schools. This additional grant will allow MESC to purchase added reading and teaching material to be used in 13 rural primary schools around the country. The Dragonflies Reading Series provides a standardized learning system with structured and effective lesson plans and activities proven to improve children’s reading and writing skills.MESC is grateful to the U.S. Government for the assistance noting that English literacy remains relatively low amongst students in many rural primary schools. The grant was presented by Chargé d’ Affaires Chad Berbert to MESC officials at the U.S.
