Washington, D.C. —Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata welcomed notification of several grants for youth education efforts in insular areas from the Interior Department’s Office of Insular Affairs (OIA), along with a grant for linemen training.

OIA is providing a grant of $1 million in Technical Assistance Program (TAP) funds to the Close Up Foundation for the youth opportunities in the Insular Areas, specifically designated to the Close Up Insular Area Program, with the federal funding via OIA’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP).

TAP funding of $499,100 was awarded to the Junior State of America (JSA) for the 2021 JSA Insular Affairs Youth Civic Engagement Program for High School Students Program.

Also, TAP funds of $174,900 are for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), supporting WICHE membership in the U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States.

Finally, Maintenance Assistance Program (MAP) funding of $246,050 was awarded to the Yap State Public Service Corporation for the 2021 Pacific Lineman Training Program.

“Successful grants require important effort behind the scenes from people working with these programs. Congratulations to everyone involved,” said Amata. “Thank you especially to Acting Assistant Secretary Nikolao Pula. I’m so pleased to see the youth education funding, and it will be wonderful whenever our Close Up students can resume travel to the U.S. Capitol once again!”
